The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a social sciences institute with its main campus based in Mumbai, India. Since its establishment in 1936, it has been one of the premier institutes in India in social sciences, human development, public policy and economics. The institute is a part of an elite group of research and higher learning institutes with early support from the Tata Trusts in India. Other institutes in this group include Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc) and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences was ranked in top Indian universities, colleges and institutes in Social, Demography and Economics research by a Stanford University study.[ The master’s degree programme in Human Resource Management and Labour Relations (erstwhile Personnel Management and Industrial Relations) offered at the TISS Mumbai campus is one of the most prestigious programs in the field of HR in India

Under the Work Integrated Training Programme, TISS-SVE offers courses currently beginning with Diploma course and leading to Bachelor of Vocational Degree (B.Voc). Every individual level/year is a standalone certification recognised and awarded by TISS as a deemed university. This course allows the students who have completed 12th standard or equivalent to join directly at NSQF Level 5 based on their academic achievements. The target group for such courses is largely marginalized youth who are seeking non-formal educational methods to enhance earning capabilities and thereby improve livelihood conditions.

Governance

The institute has a governing board nominated by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, the University of Mumbai and the University Grants Commission along with representatives from the institute and Advisor to the Prime Minister of India. The chairperson of the governing board has functions similar to that of the chancellor of a conventional university. The academic council decides matters of academic nature and comprises faculty drawn from the institute’s 4 campuses and as well as 6 external experts.

Objective

The objective of the B. Voc. HM Program is to train the students to be efficient hospitality professionals.
The Program is designed keeping in mind the needs of the Industry for well trained professionals who will be able to work as per the set standards.
The Management subjects included in the curriculum prepare the students to be future managers & leaders of the hospitality industry.
Seminars conducted by industry experts and visits to the industry prepare the students for their future career.
